Geoff Evans: We need more safe cycle lanes!

A tour de force on the lack of cycle paths around Geoff's patch - handily organised by compass points - before he goes off road and into the unrelated undergrowth of TV licences. Gripping stuff.

We need more safe cycle lanes!

I was particularly interested in Mr L. Turner's letter in the Worksop Guardian (12th December 2014) regarding cyclists.

Many, many valid points were raised, especially those regarding being seen in this dark and dismal weather.

However, I feel as if our local authorities have also continued to fail the public regarding the provision of safe cycle lanes alongside our congested and totally inadequate roads. Why is this, I ask?

Despite environmentalists and health experts warning of global warming, obesity and breathing issues, I feel very few, if any sanctuaries are provided for cyclists at present away from moving traffic. Where I live, if I travel in an easterly direction towards Worksop using either the A619 or the A616 or A60, there is not one cycle lane provided for the entire nine miles into town by either Derbyshire or Notts councils. If I travel in a westerly direction towards Chesterfield using the A632 Bolsover to Chesterfield Road, again the whole seven-and-a-half mile route is devoid of a cycle lane. Disgraceful!

If I travel in a southerly direction towards Mansfield, then the nightmare that is the A618 is on par with a country lane and once again no cycle lane until I reach Pleasley, some eight miles away!

Similarly, if I travel north towards Sheffield (using the main A616/A6135 from Junction 30 of the M1 motorway at Barlborough via Renishaw and Mosborough, not one solitary cycle lane. [you need a closing bracket, Geoff!]

Not having had a TV myself for the last ten years now (and feeling happier and shackle free for it), I'd gladly pay £150 a year for a cycle licence, if only our authorities would wake up and listen to the experts regarding health and general wellbeing, instead of the sinking feeling of depression, doom and gloom as is rife at the moment!
